Our fine art prints
Skyart Collector’s Edition fine art prints are high quality, archival photographic reproductions on a variety of substrates, suitable for collectors and corporate art buyers. We serve the personal, home decor, corporate office and wholesale fine art consulting or designer trades.
Our Collector’s Editions are hand-numbered and signed prints that offer quality and value over the long-term. Rather than place an artificial limit on each image printed, these will be restricted open editions. None of our original images will ever be used to create lithographed large printrun posters that dilute the value of fine art. For any one original, there will only be a certain number of prints made (most under 100, a few up to 500) so our Editions are effectively Limited Editions. Prints of any size and on any substrate are all numbered consecutively, beginning with #1 for each unique original image in the collection. For an interesting perspective on the inherent shortcomings of Limited Editions, see the essay on edition size by Brooks Jensen.
Each print is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity matched to the print by a unique ID number, containing detailed information about the image, print, process and edition number. Our certificates are very detailed, ensuring maximum value and security of your fine art purchase.
The process
We begin with a transparency from our Skyart Collection of over 100,000 images on sky, clouds and weather phenomena and create a full resolution drum scan digital file. This file is cleaned and corrected for color and contrast but not appreciably altered or cropped. None of our photographs are digitally manipulated or exaggerated, only fine tuned to match the original sky scene on film.
Every print is custom created individually for each order. Prints are made with custom profiles using the latest inkjet or laser technology on thick, high-quality archival materials with inks or dyes that will resist fading or cracking for 80+ years under proper care. Each print is a faithful photographic reproduction of the original scene, conveying a natural beauty rich in color and texture.
Types of prints and finishes
Our highest quality giclée prints are on heavy weight, 100% acid free cotton rag fine art papers in a matte finish, using archival quality inks. Canvas is available as an alternative.
Paper giclée
If your primary interest is collectibility or longevity, our giclée prints are the best choice. They offer a luxurious “art” feeling and impression while retaining fine texture and a natural appearance on a prestigious heavyweight paper. These prints should be protected behind glass to maintain their colors over time.
Canvas giclée
Fine art archival canvas prints are a good alternative if you need very large prints and/or do not want to frame behind glass due to glare or expense. Canvas is varnish coated to protect the surface and usually mounted onto stretcher bars. It is very versatile for displaying in open public spaces with an immediacy not possible with traditional framing methods. Canvas is also less fragile (safer), lighter and easier to transport. However, it may exhibit more texture, which might interfere with some fine detail.
Other alternatives
If you prefer a more traditional print with glossy or semigloss finish, created on photographic paper, then there are two choices. The more common (and less expensive) choice is Fuji Crystal Archive paper exposed with color lasers. These archival quality prints will last 60+ years without fading and present a saturated, vibrant image with smooth, rich colors and fine detail. A very similar finish and effect can also be created on a smooth, coated white fine art paper.
Ilford Classic prints (Cibachromes) are super glossy, high saturation, high contrast true photo-chemical based prints. They are stunning but can be overwhelming, lacking the subtlety of the giclées and requiring more care and protection.
Other choices such as Black and White, backlit transparency films, direct printing on glass, wood or metals are all possible. For all custom printing enquiries, please contact us to discuss your preferences.
